February 11, 2022 - Mount Dora, Florida

We checked out the small quaint lakefront town of Mount Dora, which featured shops, restaurants, art galleries, and gift stores in the charming downtown.

After a nice lunch at the Olive Branch restaurant featuring Mediteranean cuisine, we checked out the Modernism Museum.  This one large room museum focuses on the Studio Arts Movement, a form of modernism where high art meets craftsmanship, posing the question, "Is it sculpture, or is it furniture?"

To many people, postmodern design is synonymous with the Memphis Group.  In the 80s and 90s, this Italian collaborative created the most radical and attention-getting designs of the period, upending most of the accepted standards of how furniture should look.

There was an interesting video explaining this period of furniture art which was helpful.  The museum was basically an exhibit of the Memphis Group including David Bowie's Memphis collection.

Others have described Memphis' colorful furniture as "bizarre", "misunderstood", "loathed", and "a shotgun wedding between Bauhaus and Fisher-Price".

Discuss.
